The product decision

Build a character and collectible experience around Webtoon’s comics, while making the identity integration a foundation we could reuse with future partners.

01

The opportunity extended beyond reading an episode.

Webtoon wanted stronger repeat engagement through characters and collectibles connected to its comics. Delivering that experience required bringing together character capabilities, digital assets, and access across two products.

I owned the Genies product work end to end, translating Webtoon’s goals into the experience, integration requirements, priorities, and delivery plan.

02

I connected the customer goal to an executable plan.

I worked with the partner and our engineering team to identify what we could reuse, where the gaps were, and what needed to be built or scaled. I prioritized the work around the initial reader experience and made the implications for our existing roadmap explicit.

That meant coordinating delivery across company boundaries while keeping the success criteria focused on readers returning and continuing to the next episode.

03

The identity decision had to work beyond one customer.

I translated Webtoon’s authentication requirements into product requirements and acceptance criteria, working with engineering on federated OIDC login. The product decision was to invest in a reusable approach to partner identity as part of the deployment.

The tradeoffMeet the partner’s immediate needs and build a repeatable integration pattern.

I kept the first launch focused while making the identity approach reusable. That approach became the pattern for partner integrations.

My role was to define the requirements, make the scope and sequencing decisions, and drive alignment and delivery. Engineering owned the technical implementation.

04

The US test improved reader engagement.

We launched a US test across five comics, with 79 characters and hundreds of collectible assets. Reported average weekly visits per user increased from 1.7 to 2.5.

Separately, Webtoon’s A/B tests reported a 20% relative improvement in episode-to-episode retention. These results describe the tested reader experience, with the retention experiment run by Webtoon.
